PDP inaugurates caretaker committees for Ogun, others, Kashamu kicks

The Chairman of the National Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, on Wednesday in Abuja inaugurated caretaker committees for the party in Ogun, Borno and Kebbi states.

While Abdulahi Wali heads the Kebbi committee, Abdulmalik Mahmud and Tunde Odanye, were named as heads of the Borno and Ogun chapters respectively.

The inauguration followed the dissolution of the executives in the respective chapters at the recently concluded non-elective national convention of the party held in Abuja.

Inaugurating the committees at the party’s national secretariat, Makarfi said, “We don’t have luxury of time. We won’t allow circumstance to hold us back. We called both sides. You can’t force everybody to come. We thank all those that came.

“Those who genuinely repent and give in to the party will be given equal chance in the party. As we move we remain flexible and accommodating. We have not closed the door; we will never close the door. We will create a level-playing field for everybody.”

He said the state executives were dissolved to ensure unity in the party.

The former governor of Kaduna State said, “We will remain accommodating to both PDP and non-PDP members and as you are inaugurated today, be aware that reconciliation has not ended.

Go back to your states and constitute ward and local government committees in conjunction with other stakeholders of the party.”

He asked the committees’ members to conduct elective congresses “within the next three months.”

But in his reaction, Senator Buruji Kashamu in a statement described the composition of members of the Ogun State caretaker committee as one-sided.

Kashamu said, “The action of the Senator  Ahmed Makarfi-led NCC which derives its legitimacy from the court is not only an affront on the peace-loving leaders and members of our party in Ogun State but a most devastating slap on the judiciary.

“The caretaker committee is one-sided and made up of ex-governor Gbenga Daniel’s nominees with the exception of the chairman. How then could these people be talking of reconciliation and harmonisation? Clearly, they are liars and deceivers.

“Having emerged from a validly organised congress which was ratified by the 71st National Executive Committee, the NCC is aware of the valid and subsisting judgment in favour of the Adebayo Dayo-led State Executive Committee of the PDP in Suit No.  HC/L/CS/636/2016 which has yet to be appealed, set aside or upturned; yet it chose to continue on the path of impunity and lawlessness. I do not see how these people can reposition the party. They want to compound its problems.

He said it was surprising that the NCC and other organs of the party, which he said were products of the law, could encourage illegality and impunity.
